Another upcoming film that needs little explanation save for the filmmaker is Django Unchained.
It’s the new film by Quentin Tarantino. That’s all that really needs to be said.
It will undoubtedly be Tarantino’s most direct homage to the spaghetti western. Though, many (probably all) of his previous films have referenced the likes of Sergio Leone and the Italian “spaghetti” westerns that made Clint Eastwood an icon.
The film stars Jamie Foxx as an escaped slave seeking to save his wife and exact his revenge. He is Django (great name by Tarantino) and he is unchained from the shackles of slavery.
In an eyebrow raising and sure to be brilliant bit of casting, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the Tarantino baddie in this one named Calvin Candie. I don’t think we’ve seen DiCaprio as a bad guy before, at least not as a Tarantino type baddie, so his turn as the sadistic plantation owner is eagerly anticipated.
DiCaprio’s entourage of slavers is made up of Kurt Russell as his right hand man and Samuel L. Jackson as his house slave. Both Tarantino regulars, of course.
And with Django on his revenge seeking journey is the excellent Christoph Waltz as a German dentist turned bounty hunter. Yes, dentist turned bounty hunter. Waltz is the unforgettable and most evil of Nazi’s from Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. I guess we can lump Waltz in with the Tarantino regulars now.
No doubt the dialogue in Django Unchained will be so dense it can be cut with a knife and the soundtrack will include forgotten gems from the ’60′s and 70′s.
And blood will spurt. Lots of it. All Tarantino staples.
You can just tell this has the makings of a Tarantino classic.
It will release on Christmas. But think twice before taking grandma to it Christmas day.
The poster above was just released.
